Why the old site is slow, and why that will not change
Most WordPress sites built in the last decade are page builder sites. Divi, WPBakery, Elementor. Those builders are the heaviest thing on the web. They ship hundreds of kilobytes of CSS and JavaScript on every page so that a drag-and-drop editor can exist, and the visitor pays for it on every load.
The plugin stack is the other half. Every plugin is code you did not write, running with full access to your database, updated by someone you have never met. Twenty plugins is twenty vendors with a key to your site. That is why the maintenance never ends.
You cannot optimize your way out of this. Caching plugins hide it. Image compression trims the edges. The architecture is still a database query, a PHP render, and a megabyte of builder assets on every single request.
The replacement removes the cause. Pages are built once and served as files. There is no PHP to exploit, no database to inject, no plugin to update at midnight. A page that ships 20KB of HTML and one stylesheet is fast on a phone in a parking lot, which is where your visitors actually are.
